Faisal Aziz Ahmed, high commissioner of Pakistan to New Zealand, recently joined friends and family of Ashraf Choudhary, former member of parliament, as he celebrated his 50 years in New Zealand.
“Choudhary’s legacy includes his many scientific and academic accomplishments, his work for the betterment of the community and his seminal role in launching and promoting the now multi-billion dollar NZ halal meat export industry,” the high commission said in a post on X.
As the first Muslim, the first South Asian and the first Kiwi of Pakistani origin to become a member of New Zealand Parliament, Ashraf Choudhry broke at once, many a glass ceiling. His contribution as an icon of the Kiwi Pakistani community is acknowledged and appreciated, the post noted.
